The Scottish Consortium of Music societies (SCOMS ) is a national group comprising volunteer run music societies throughout Scotland.

The purpose of SCOMS is to enrich the cultural life of Scotland by supporting the provision of live classical music across the nation. This is being achieved, inter alia, by encouraging collaboration and support among music societies and by advocating for the importance of live classical music in the community and in educational settings.

Currently there are around 70 music societies, mostly rural, involving over 300 volunteers programming, arranging venues, marketing, and feeding and accommodating musicians. The music societies are independent entities, some of which are charities. Their common theme is the promotion and performance of chamber music in its many forms and commissioning of new works. Modern composers feature regularly in most concert programmes. These voluntary efforts amount to a major community investment in live music performance.

The formation of SCOMS acknowledges the national spread of music societies and their crucial role in providing local community access to professional chamber music.

The primary role of SCOMS is to support Scotland’s Music Societies in the coordination and provision of local classical music concerts and associated activities.

The organisation was formally constituted at its first annual general meeting Saturday May 17th 2025 in Perth.
